Shadow Stalker: Episode 3 – A Series by Renee Scattergood

SSE3 Cover JPGShadow Stalker: Shadows’ Betrayal (Episode 3)

Synopsis:

The Council of Elders on the Dark Isle, the home of the shadow stalkers, have refused to allow their people to help the Coalition in the war against the Galvadi Empire. Now the Coalition is in danger of falling to their enemy. If this happens, the shadow stalkers will have no ally against the empire.

After seeing Kado’s vision and learning what she will become, Auren is terrified of leaving the Dark Isle. It seems the Council of Elders may be plotting against her, despite her willingness to remain on the island.

To escape the tensions being placed on them by the council, Kado and Auren leave their village to explore the Dark Isle, but there are worse things lurking in the islands forests than the power hungry council.

Blurb:

After seeing the monster she will become, Auren swears not to leave the Dark Isle. Despite that, the elders are conspiring against her. To escape their scheming, she and Kado decide to explore the Dark Isle. But worse things await them in the forests.

Teaser:

“The council thinks that your bond with Auren’s mother corrupted you, and that

you’re not seeing the danger that she represents,” Cathnor said.

Kado snorted. “I’m the one who is corrupt, while they presume to do everything in

their power to prevent our people from having a Foramar.”

“I know. Do you know what they are up to?”

“They want Auren incapacitated,” Kado said in a low tone and hesitated. “I believe

some of them may even want her…”

Review

The main focus of this episode is discovery. We get to spend more time with Auren and Kado and the bond between them grows stronger. Emotionally, for Auren, it’s a rollercoaster ride. Kado finally opens up to her, sharing the prophecy in a series of disturbing visions. At first she is horrified by the monster she is destined to become, and determined to do everything in her power to prevent it. It explains Kado’s recent behaviour and his fierce determination to prepare her for an unknown future.

As a guardian, Kado’s main priority is Auren’s safety. But with the Council of Elders plotting against him, his loyalties are tested to the limit. When he discovers the Elders want to take Auren into custody, to prevent her from leaving the Dark Isles, he decides to leave the village.

Reminiscent of their earlier trips to the Serpent Isles, Kado uses the opportunity to continue Auren’s training. This, for me, is the heart of the episode. Auren is tested at every turn. She faces carnivorous plants, truths about her past and discovers the dangers of entering the shadow world.

The relationship between Auren and Kado is one of my favourite elements of the series and Renee handles the conflicts beautifully. It is clear Auren is out of her element and must trust Kado with her life. When the storm hits, all her training his called upon and, this time, even Kado might not be able to help.

It was an explosive ending to an action packed episode. We learn more about the characters, and the events which influenced them. Auren is really coming into her own and her endurance is one of the things I love about her.

The revelations in Shadows’ Betrayal are well-timed, adding to the mystery and thrill of this incredible journey. I can’t wait for the next episode.
